During the winter months, the viruses responsible for COVID-19 and flu circulate simultaneously, causing a rise in cases of both. COVID-19 and flu are both contagious and spread quickly through droplets expelled from the mouth or nose when you breathe, cough, sneeze or talk. COVID-19 and flu can both cause mild to severe illness and share many common symptoms, so it’s important to be able to supports and differentiate between them effectively.
COVID-19 is caused by the virus SARS-CoV-2. This is part of the coronavirus family, which causes a variety of diseases ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). Flu is a separate respiratory illness caused by the influenza virus and mainly infects the nose and throat.
